2024 WAFCONQ: Ajibade reflects on Super Falcons’ big win over Cape Verde

Stand-in captain, Rasheedat Ajibade says the Super Falcons must keep working hard despite Thursday’s comprehensive victory against Cape Verde.

The Falcons thrashed their fellow West Africans 5-0 in the first leg of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronwko bagged a brace each while Gift Monday scored the goal.

Cape Verde must score six goals without conceding in the reverse fixture to stop the Super Falcons from securing a place at the 2024 WAFCON finals which will be hosted by Morocco.

Ajibade stated that they must keep their feet on the ground despite the first leg result.

“Like the coach said, it is still a work in progress, and we just have to build on this place where we stopped today. It is not the best game; we could be better because we set a standard for ourselves, so we just have to keep building up on this standard,” the Atletico Madrid star told reporters.

With some of the key stars missing, interim head coach Justin Madugu has been forced to introduce some of the young players to the team.

Ajibade highlighted the importance of having a blend of youth and experienced players in the team.

“It is very important that you have youthful players on the team, and you also have experienced players because sometimes experience beats youthfulness. When you have both the youths and experienced ones on the pitch, it really helps,” she added.

The second leg is slated for the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde, Praia next Tuesday.
