Alhassan Yusuf fights to be fit for Côte d’Ivoire Clash, NFF addresses Umar Sadiq’s Injury

Uncertainty Surrounds Alhassan Yusuf’s Return

The injury scare to Alhassan Yusuf may very well be confirmed, after the player apparently needed a scan examination.

Yusuf picked up an injury in Nigeria’s opening group game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, against Equatorial Guinea and the midfielder has since not trained.

On Tuesday morning, accompanied by a medical officer, the Midfielder left the team’s base at Pullman Hotel, and returned lunch time.

Although the outcome of the scan result is yet to be made public, Alhassan Yusuf’s fitness is still in doubt and could miss further training sessions before the crucial match against Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday.

Initially, the player had told BRL exclusively, that he suffered from cramps.

Also, head Coach Jose Peseiro expressed some optimism, that the injury won’t keep the 23 year-old out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Coaches will thread cautiously after the embarrassment caused by the Umar Sadiq scandal.

Sadiq was cut from the team before Nigeria’s first game on the grounds of the player picking up an injury that affected his meniscus.

He was seen in training with a strapped knee, and was subsequently replaced with Paul Onuachu.

However, days later Sadiq was shown on videos, posted by his LaLiga club Real Sociedad, in training and has since been named in the Copa del Rey matchday squad.

The Nigeria Football Federation released a statement debunking allegations of tampering or incompetence in Sadiq’s case.

In its statement released on Tuesday, the team doctors were said to have acted according to standard practice.

“The fact is that our medical team meticulously abided by the best medical procedures and were diligent in their processes and conclusions before advising Head Coach José Peseiro that the player be withdrawn from the squad.”
