Arne Slot confirms decision over Feyenoord future

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has ruled himself out of contention to succeed Jesse Marsch at Leeds United.

The Whites sacked Marsch on Monday after the 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest at the weekend extended their winless Premier League run to eight games.

Leeds quickly pieced together a list of potential targets to take over, but their top candidate Carlos Corberan opted to extend his contract at West Bromwich Albion despite having worked under Marsch’s predecessor in West Yorkshire, Marcelo Bielsa.

Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola was revealed by 90min to be another manager under consideration, but he too opted against joining after Leeds showed reluctance to pay his release clause.

That led to increased interest in Slot, who has led Feyenoord to the top of the Eredivisie table ahead of established giants Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

But the Dutchman has confirmed that he will be staying in Rotterdam, in his press conference ahead of the weekend clash with Heerenveen.

“It is true that I will stay with Feyenoord, I can say that with this one. That is clear, fans do not have to be afraid,” Slot said.

Asked whether he could not or did not want to leave, Slot added: “I think a combination of both. The club has been clear. It was a compliment that a club like Leeds was interested, but we are doing something great with Feyenoord. We are in a great position in the league, the cup and Europe.

“There is no disappointment. It’s certainly not a punishment to stay here.”

Michael Skubala, Paco Gallardo and Chris Armas are likely to take charge once more when Leeds meet Manchester United in the Premier League for the second time in four days.
