Bauchi govt cautions principals, others against diversion of food meant for pupils

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Jamila Dahiru, has cautioned principals, storekeepers and food masters in boarding secondary schools against misappropriation of food items meant for students.

Dahiru, who gave the warning during a meeting with the stakeholders on Friday, said the misappropriation and diversion of funds allocated for perishable food items will not be tolerated any more.

According to her, the issue of inflated figures, and submission of false or exaggerated figures meant for food supplies will be met with stiff consequences.

Addressing the concerns of misappropriation, the commissioner emphasised zero-tolerance for fund diversion.

“Delayed or incorrect reporting will be sanctioned, while timely and accurate reporting of any irregularities in the direct feeding programme is encouraged, as it is very crucial.” She warned

Dahiru said further that “The ministry will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone found engaging in these practices. Our top priority is the well-being of our students, and they deserve access to quality and adequate meals.”

This is as she expressed gratitude to the state governor, Bala Mohammed, for his continuous support in ensuring timely food supplies and overall improvement in the education sector.

Recall the commissioner had earlier dissolved food monitors and the direct feeding committee responsible for overseeing food supply activities in all boarding schools across the state.

In a statement issued last month, Dahiru said the dissolution is with immediate effect, adding that the move is aimed at enhancing food quality and transparency, following concerns regarding decline in food quality and quantity.
