Bayern Munich: Eric Dier triggers one-year contract option at Bundesliga champions

Eric Dier began his professional career with Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon

England defender Eric Dier has triggered an option to make his move to Bayern Munich permanent this summer to signal the end of his Tottenham career.

Dier, 30, joined Bayern on loan until the end of the season in January after he fell out of favour at Spurs.

The deal included a clause which would activate a new 12-month contract at the Allianz Arena if he played a certain number of games at Bayern.

Dier’s contract with Tottenham was set to expire on 30 June.

“I’m happy in Munich. Now my future is sorted, and I can focus on playing well for the club and trying to help the club to win games and competitions, even though it’s been a difficult period for us,” said Dier, whose Bayern deal runs until June 2025.

He has played seven times for Thomas Tuchel’s side, including five starts for the defending Bundesliga champions.

Dier started Friday’s 2-2 draw at Freiburg that saw Bayern lose further ground in the title race to leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

“Dier’s contract has been extended by a further year after making a certain number of appearances,” said director of sport Max Eberl. “He’s a valuable support in our defence with all his character.”

Cheltenham-born Dier joined Tottenham in a £4m deal from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in 2014 and made 274 Premier League appearances for the club.

However, he made just one league start under Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou before he followed Harry Kane to Bavaria.

Dier has been capped 49 times by England since making his Three Lions debut in November 2015.
