Mauricio Pochettino says it is normal for managers to ‘defend our clubs’ following Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s comments of refereeing and VAR.

The Chelsea boss was asked for his thoughts on the VAR debacle that appears to have divided the football community over the last week.

After Newcastle scored a controversial goal to beat Arsenal last Saturday, Arteta called the officials’ decisions ‘disgraceful and ’embarrassing’ with the Gunners later releasing a statement backing up their manager.

This received much scrutiny from pundits but support from fans, similar to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s remarks after they were wrongly denied a goal in their loss at Tottenham earlier this season.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou also hit out at VAR following last Monday’s defeat to Chelsea, saying he does not like the amount of time it takes up and how it can undermine the on-pitch referee.

Asked whether he agreed with either Arteta or Postecoglou on VAR, Pochettino says he can sympathise with his rivals.

‘It is difficult to judge for me because I don’t know which side Ange is on, and Mikel is talking about one action,’ the Argentine said in his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Manchester City.

‘If we go back and listen to Klopp after Liverpool Tottenham, it is normal to complain. Or maybe it’s normal to complain when Arteta believes the ball is out or [his player is] fouled.

‘Different people have different opinions. I think Monday was obvious with all of the decisions.

‘The most important this is that we cannot go back with VAR. VAR is here and we now need to try to use in the best way because the technology is there.

‘The moment we implement the VAR was the moment to say careful and the consequence in the next few years is going to be really tough.

‘I accept that Mikel or Klopp can complain or Ange can say another thing. We need to justify ourself and defend our club. It is normal.’
