Crisis in Syria 'much worse' as prices rise due to Ukraine war, UNICEF says

Skyrocketing prices — in part due to the war in Ukraine — are among the factors pushing more Syrians into poverty, says UNICEF.

Prices have doubled or even tripled, Juliette Touma, the charity’s chief of advocacy and communications in the Middle East and North Africa.

“We haven’t seen these increases in the crisis since the peak of the war in 2013. So families are really struggling to bring food to the table,” Touma said.

She said rising unemployment and dwindling funds for humanitarian assistance were also factors.

Touma was speaking on the day a conference in Brussels was seeking to raise funds for Syria and the region.

“The needs are quite, quite dire, not just for the children, but also for UNICEF from a financial perspective.”
