Olusanya Atofarati, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zonal publicity secretary in Ekiti state, has completed his attempt to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest marathon watching TV.

Atofarati had last week announced his 120-hour TV-watching quest via his social media platforms.

The community leader began his attempt on December 27 and concluded it on January 1 in Ado Ekiti.

The chief held the GWR attempt in his home, where several prominent persons in Ekiti state paid him courtesy visits.

In a video shared on his Facebook page on Monday, Atofarati held a Nigerian flag while celebrating his win with colleagues and friends.

The politician said he undertook the quest because of his intention to “put my country home, my state, and my country to the limelight”.

Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday, Atofarati said his team is already preparing to submit their pieces of evidence to the GWR on Wednesday.

“The next step now is that by tomorrow, my team members will review all the pieces of evidence compiled and we will submit it to Guinness World Records,” the PDP spokesperson said.

Atofarati said he would be celebrating the attempt with 100 widows in Ilawe Ekiti on Tuesday.

“Watching TV for 120 hours has strengthened my knowledge base because I am better informed about the world and happenings around me which I believe will further enhance my capacity to deliver,” he told journalists.

“I am of the belief that the exercise has further added value to tourism benefits in Nigeria. I thank Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Senator Biodun Olujimi; and the director-general, Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Ambassador Wale Ojo-Lanre, for the encouragement and support.

“I also appreciate the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi; former Deputy Speaker of Ekiti State, Segun Adewumi; Ekiti State former commissioner for works, Funmi Ogun; Lanre Fajuyi; the host community under Elder Sunday Agunbiade; and a host of others too numerous to mention and my wife, Mrs Orobosa Atofarati.”

Alejandro Fragoso, a New York-based web developer, is the current holder of the longest marathon-watching television record. He achieved his feat within 94 hours in 2016.
