Even Tottenham’s club reporter couldn’t cheer Ange Postecoglu up as he shuts down ‘good football’ comment

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou did not want to hear comments about his side playing ‘good football’ in their defeat to West Ham.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 against the Hammers on Thursday night, which made it five games without a win.

Cristian Romero gave Postecoglou’s lift off, but second-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse won the game for David Moyes’ troops.

Even the club reporter, who was trying to put a positive spin on the evening, couldn’t cheer the manager up.

“You see the result, and you forget how good we were in the first half,” he said.

The comments quickly prompted a response from Postecoglou.

“We weren’t good. We have got to get away from that. I don’t believe that, that is part of the problem.”

At the end of the day, Postecoglu is a football manager paid to win games and like any top level boss, is not happy when he doesn’t.

“I think everyone is saying we are playing good football, good football means you win games, and I am not here to play good football, I am here to win.

“That has been the clear message from day one to the players, that we play this style of football not to get pats on the back, but to win games and bring success to this football club.

“You need to embrace that, it is not easy, I am not saying it is easy, but that is where we need to be.”

But this was far from an attack on the club’s in house team. Everyone who spoke to the manager at full-time got a similar response.

Tottenham are now the first side to manage a 1-0 lead in five consecutive Premier League matches without winning any of them.

The north London outfit now drops to fifth place in the table level on 27 points with sixth-placed Manchester United.

Postecoglou’s side entertain Eddie Howe’s Newcastle on Sunday at home.

The Magpies will be keen to return to winning ways after falling short themselves to Everton, losing 3-0 away at Goodison Park on Thursday night.
