Coach Jose Peseiro officially announced his departure from the Nigerian national team on Friday, as revealed in a statement on social media.
The seasoned Portuguese coach, who initially mentioned taking a break, bid farewell to his role, triggering speculation about potential successors.
Among the candidates being considered for the coveted position is Finidi George, who previously collaborated with Peseiro as an assistant during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
George, currently handling Nigeria’s biggest football club Enyimba of Aba is reportedly in the running, possibly even on a temporary basis.
Emmanuel Amuneke, a accomplished U17 coach with experience managing the Tanzania national team, has also surfaced as a contender for the role.
Augustine Eguavoen, presently serving as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is contemplated for a fourth stint as coach, albeit on an interim basis.
Notably, Sunday Oliseh, the former captain and coach of the Eagles, is in contention for a return to the coaching role.
Oliseh parted ways with the position in 2016 following a dispute with the then NFF board led by Amaju Pinnick.
The unfolding developments hint at an intriguing and competitive race to fill the void left by Peseiro’s departure.
