Jurgen Klopp insists Caoimhin Kelleher is ready to step into Alisson’s boots as Liverpool’s No.1.

The 25-year-old Irishman kept a clean sheet in the Europa League last night and will start between the sticks in the Premier League against Fulham this weekend with Alisson currently injured.

Asked if he believes Kelleher is ready and capable of being a No.1 at a club like Liverpool, Klopp said: “Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.

“We see him every day in training, he is exceptional, he’s an exceptional talent.

“Maybe we don’t mention his name often enough but [Reds goalkeeper coach] John Achterberg said from day one when I came in, he told me this will be our homegrown boy who will make it, and since then we’ve see every step, he was a boy and now he’s a man.

“He’s a top goallie, no doubt.”

Kelleher was linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer on loan, but a move away from blocked by the Reds who insisted they needed him as a No.2.

And while the young Irishman was frustrated with his lack of game time, Klopp says he now has the opportunity he has been waiting for.

“We had discussions in the summer but as long as we don’t have a solution [a replacement] we cannot loan players.

“He is homegrown too, so we have to make sure first and foremost that we do the best for Liverpool.

“Now obviously this is the situation he didn’t want to have, but somehow he has because we want to give him an opportunity and now he has.

“He will get a few games, definitely, and I trust him.”
