The Jeddah based club is run by former Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay who is their chairman and they boast former Premier League stars Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy and Allan Saint Maximin on their playing staff.

Congerton, 52, has been head of senior recruitment at Atalanta since 2022 and was pivotal in negotiations over the sale of Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for £72million last summer.

He has been considered by a number of Premier League clubs but was understood to be settled running operations at Atalanta who are fifth in Serie A.

Now Al Ahli are pushing for him to join them ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer for Saudi clubs.

Congerton, who hails from north Wales originally, has built up experience working at clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea, Hamburg, Sunderland and Celtic in various recruitment roles.

Al Ahli are third in the Saudi Pro League but are 16 points behind leaders Al Hilal.
