Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in shock talks with international side to return to management

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly held talks with the Swedish FA regarding their vacant managerial position.

The 50-year-old has been out of a job since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021 following the 4-1 defeat away at Watford.

But the 1999 Champions League winner could soon be back on the touchline in what would be his first international role.

According to Fotbollskanalen, Solskjaer and the Swedish FA discussed about him becoming their new national team boss.

Sweden are on the lookout for a new boss after Janne Andersson resigned after their final Euro 2024 qualifying clash.

Having finished third in their group, it is the first time since Euro 1996 that Sweden have failed to qualify for the European Championship.

And it has been said that Solskjaer is one of a number of people that has been identified to succeed Andersson.

That is despite the former Cardiff manager never playing or working in Sweden.

It has also been said that the Swedish FA are not against a non-Swede taking charge to give Solskjaer a boost given his Norwegian roots.

However Solskjaer doesn’t appear to be Sweden’s preferred choice, with ex-Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg and Australia women’s coach Tony Gustavsson high on their shortlist.

Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson – Denmark’s joint all-time top scorer – is also claimed to be under consideration.

Speaking in September, Solskjaer revealed how he had turned offers to return to football – including two from Saudi Arabia.

He told The Athletic: ” I’ve had offers. The latest two from Saudi Arabia.

“My best friend, who is also my agent, goes through the offers.

“If you’ve been the manager of Manchester United, you can have your own requirements for what you want to work with.”
