Spurs opened up a five point lead at the top of the league with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night with manager Ange Postecoglou urging supporters to ‘dream’ about lifting the trophy.

His side have taken 26 points from a possible 30 so far this season, only dropping points on the opening day of the season against Brentford and in the north London derby against Arsenal.

Neville believes that should Spurs find themselves still at the top once the transfer window reopens in January, then further reinforcements should be brought in to bolster their chances.

But the former Manchester United defender fears Tottenham will drop off before that point, not convinced the current squad is good enough to last the course.

When asked if Spurs are potential league winners or title challengers, Neville told Sky Sports: ‘I don’t think they are.

‘I believe this is something that will settle down in the next few months, but if for some reason the rest of the teams aren’t quite there and Tottenham, who are not in Europe and out of the Carabao Cup, keep their players fit, they could have an exceptional season.

‘If they are in contention in January and up there, then why wouldn’t they try and boost the squad slightly to have a go at it because if City aren’t quite there or Arsenal slip up, why wouldn’t you have a go at it.

‘However, I don’t think they have a good enough squad or are a good enough team to win the league.

‘But what they are doing at this moment in time is exceeding all expectation of where they would be. Postecoglou is doing a great job for them.’

Tottenham host Chelsea next weekend before games against Wolves and Aston Villa in November.

A true test of their title credentials will come on 3 December when they take on Manchester City at the Etihad.
