Gary Neville hits back at Jamie Carragher after the Reds legend mocked his views on the Man United takeover – and tells his punditry partner to use his ideas when he’s ‘trying to kick Liverpool’s owners out’ in a few years’ time

Gary Neville has hit back at fellow Sky pundit Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender poked fun at his ideas to improve Manchester United’s ownership structure. 

It was announced over the weekend that Sheikh Jassim of Qatar had pulled out of the race to buy United, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe set to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the club.

Neville, who made 602 appearances for the Old Trafford club, responded to the news on Sunday morning by outlining six ‘non-negotiables on a takeover of Manchester United’ on X, before listing 16 questions he felt United fans would want answering in light of the upcoming minortiy investment. 

Carrager is no stranger to having a laugh at Neville’s expense either on-screen or on social media, and he was quick to make light of the post. 

The ex-Liverpool man was particularly amused by Neville’s ‘non-negotiables’ before adding that there were ‘a few other crackers as well’ in the post.

Neville did not take the ribbing lightly though, offering a reply within minutes. 

He posted, ‘You can use it (the post) when you’re trying to kick your owners out in a few years’ and followed with a thumbs up emoji. 

The ex-United captain has been a long-term critic of the Glazer family’s ownership during their time at the club, suggesting in September that they are a responsible for ‘mediocrity on and off the pitch’.

He is therefore unlikely to be satisfied that the deal with Ratcliffe will see them retain a controlling stake in the club.

Ratcliffe, a lifelong United fan, will pay around £1.4bn for a quarter share at Old Trafford, in the first step in what is being viewed as a staged buyout.

In his original post, Neville asked: ‘How does a minority stakeholder positively impact the club to achieve the [issues listed] above? Can a minority shareholder have any impact on the above. It leaves more questions than answers.

‘My preference is and always will be now for a Glazer family full exit. They have overstayed their welcome in Manchester yet seem oblivious to this fact.’

United supporters have regularly protested against the Glazer ownership at matches over the past few seasons, and it remains to be seen how they will respond to recent developments at Saturday’s game against Sheffield United.
