Gary Neville has hit out at Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher for his ‘offensive’ opinion about the best Premier League rivalry.

The two pundits were appearing on Monday Night Football for Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Newcastle when the topic of Liverpool and Man City came up following what looks to be the final meeting between Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp on Sunday.

The Premier League title contenders played out a 1-1 draw after Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty cancelled out John Stones’ opener for Pep Guardiola’s side in an entertaining clash that saw chances galore at both ends.

After another entertaining game between the two sides, it prompted Carragher to name who he believes has enjoyed the greatest rivalry in Premier League history.

He went for Man City and Liverpool, insisting: ‘In terms of the quality, these are the better games 100 per cent. They never ever disappoint.’

Neville was baffled after Carragher stood by his view

Neville, however, was left incredulous at Carragher’s answer and said it was ‘unbelievable’ that his fellow pundit Ian Wright had not ‘pulled him up on it’, as he made the case for Arsenal and Manchester United.

‘Carragher’s statement that Liverpool-Manchester City over the last six years is the greatest rivalry is offensive.

‘From 1998 to 2004, Arsenal won three titles and Manchester United won four, there was blood, thunder, quality. Everything you’d want in a rivalry.

‘Over the last six years, Liverpool have won one title. It’s been an absolute demolition.

‘For Ian Wright to stand there and not pull him up on it is unbelievable.’

Arsenal and United were renowned for their heated clashes, exciting games and tension between two sides battling it out for silverware, though Man City and Liverpool have become bitter rivals in recent years as the two main contenders for the title.

Carragher stood by his claim and instead chose to respond by making a dig about Neville’s own involvements in heated past clashes in the Premier League.

He referenced United’s infamous tunnel clash between Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira in 2005 – joking how Neville’s reaction during the incident made it clear the two teams didn’t like each other.

The altercation started when Vieira confronted Neville before kick-off, with Keane stepping in to point the finger at the Frenchman and remonstrate over something he had said.

‘Listen there’s no doubt, I’ve said that often, theirs was a bigger rivalry, they all didn’t like each other, he was running down the tunnel trying to get away from Vieira.’

Neville had claimed City failed to deal with the Anfield ‘washing machine’ on Sunday

It came after Neville criticised City for failing to deal with the Anfield ‘washing machine’ as they laboured to a draw.

‘I thought City would win here today. I said at half-time that City could regret the way in which they approached the last 15 minutes of the first half,’ he said on his Gary Neville Podcast.

‘I don’t know why they do it here, I don’t know why they’ve not learnt.

‘I once described Anfield as being like thrown in a washing machine, tumbled around. That’s how it used to be like for us sometimes. You can be going ok and then your world caves in all around you.

‘The big disappointment for Pep Guardiola will be from the first goal going until half time. That’s the period of the game where they I thought they could have gone for it. They started ambling in the game, almost like killing the clock.

‘You can’t kill the clock here. They won’t go quiet this lot, they always come back. You’ve got to go and get the second goal. You’ve got to believe you need that second and then the third. You’re never safe in this ground.’
