I used to hawk fruits in Lagis traffic – Crayon recounts ‘trenches to triumph’ story

Popular singer, Charles Chibueze Chukwu, also known as Crayon, has recalled how he used to hawk fruits in Lagos traffic.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats on the inspiration behind the title of his album, ‘Trench to Triumph’, he explained that it’s about where he came from and how he got to where he is today.

“We moved from Orile Iganmu (Lagos) to a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ apartment in Ojo when I was seven years old. We were about nine or ten people sharing a room.

“As the first child of my parents, I faced a lot of financial struggles while growing up. I was sent home regularly from school because of unpaid fees, and I ended up taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) five times.

“I was working on my music at that time and also helping my mom at the market where she sold fruits. Sometimes, I would even hawk the fruits in traffic.

“Going from that kind of life to being signed by Mavin Records, and on my way to becoming a global superstar is my triumph. I used to be in the trenches and now I am triumphant.”
