Cristiano Ronaldo has inadvertently helped Amy MacDonald back to the top of the charts.
The former Manchester United star made the move to Saudi club Al Nassr in 2022 and with the huge transfer, his millions of fans around the world became avid followers of the Saudi Pro League.
There are countless highlight reels of Ronaldo in action across YouTube and TikTok, but the compilations of him are that popular that the song used in many of the videos has gone no.1 on Spotify in Saudi Arabia as a result.
Macdonald’s 2007 hit ‘This Is The Life’ shot to the top of the charts in six countries upon it’s original release.
Her album, which featured the tune, also went triple platinum.
Now, 16 years on, it’s bringing her new fans from a very unexpected place.
Speaking on the ‘Restless Natives‘ with Gordon Smart and actor Martin Compston, she explained her surprise.
“I started to notice I was getting a lot of comments in Arabic on my social media.
“I was like ‘it looks lovely but I’ve no idea what it says’ and there was just more and more of it.
“Somebody looked into it and there seems to be a lot of videos on social media that are using ‘This Is The Life’ over Ronaldo playing football in Saudi Arabia.
“One of my mates even sent me a photoshop of Jordan Henderson in an Amy Macdonald t-shirt! TikTok is introducing it to a whole new audience.”
Ronaldo kick started the influx of top names moving to Saudi Arabia where players can earn huge contracts.
Karim Benzema, Neymar and N’golo Kante are just three recent transfers.
The salaries may be good, making ‘This is the Life’ appropriate, but for serial winner Ronaldo, he may not agree.
Al Nassr are currently third in the league, four points behind leaders Al Hilal where Neymar is currently playing.
