Fact Check

Is picture showing Eyimba player with a handwritten jersey for a football match real? – Project FactCheck Nigeria

A picture circulating on social media shows a jersey with name and number handwritten and worn by a player of Eyimba International football club of Aba.

The claim is true.

The viral picture shows Mr. Innocent who plays number 5 for Enyimba wearing a handwritten number 3 jersey in the first leg against Wydad Casablanca at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

One of the captions on the picture reads, “See the jersey Enyimba wore for a CAF Super League match. Is this not a disgrace to Nigeria?”

Another Twitter user shared, “Hello chairman, na so you wan turn our great Enyimba to village club. This is shameful and embarrassing” alongside the picture.

In response, Enyimba explained that the error was made during registration and they had to resort to that option since CAF wouldn’t allow him play with his jersey number 5 as against the number 3 he was registered with.

“During the registration with CAF, he was registered as number 3 jersey instead of number 5.

“It was a costly error from the Team Secretary. They found out when the match was about to start, and there was no way CAF would allow him to play with the number he wasn’t registered with.” WABMA team checked.

CONCLUSION
The claim that Enyimba player wore a handwritten jersey for a match is true.
