Jamie Carragher argues Alisson was ‘EXTREMELY lucky’ that Ruben Dias’ goal for Manchester City was ruled out for Manuel Akanji foul.. as he says there was ‘hardly anything’ from the defender in challenge

Jamie Carragher believes Alisson was ‘extremely lucky’ that Ruben Dias’ goal for Manchester City was ruled out after Manuel Akanji was adjudged to have fouled him. 

The defender’s second-half goal was chalked off because Akanji and Alisson had made contact while jumping for the ball from the corner, causing the goalkeeper to miss it.

That would have put City 2-0 up but a debateable foul was given and the game eventually finished 1-1 after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late strike cancelled out Erling Haaland’s first-half effort. 

Former Liverpool defender Carragher thinks Alisson, who had a shaky day between the posts, was fortunate.

He told Sky Sports: ‘For me, Liverpool and Alisson are extremely lucky. If the referee doesn’t give that, VAR isn’t saying it’s a foul.

Dias scored a rebound to put City 2-0 up after Alisson and Akanji challenged each other for the ball, but it was chalked off 

Carragher felt Alisson had a poor game overall and will be ‘disappointed’ in himself 

‘There’s no way in the world. A goalkeeper of his quality and it’s hardly anything from Akanji. It’s like a centre-back and a centre-forward jumping for a header.

I want my goalkeeper to deal with that. I think he’ll be disappointed with his overall performance today, Alisson. I don’t think he was at it at all. 

‘He struggled at times with the ball at his feet and a goalkeeper of his quality will think he should do a little bit better.’ 

Alisson gifted City the ball multiple times and gave it away in the run-up to Haaland’s opening goal. 

While the Akanji incident was a justifiable foul, Carragher’s opinion that it was soft is also valid and was echoed in the Sky Sports studio. 

Micah Richards said: ‘I just think Alisson actually pushes him first as well and he goes back to Alisson and puts his arm on. I think it’s very soft.

‘he’s not stopping him from putting his arm up, he’s just using him as a guideline. He doesn’t stop him, he’s just using him to balance.’ 

Alisson, who played twice for Brazil over the international break, went down injured towards the end of the game but played the full match as Liverpool broke City’s 23-game winning streak at the Etihad Stadium.
