Jermaine Jenas repeatedly called a player by the wrong name during Brighton’s Premier League clash with Wolves on Monday night.

The Seagulls were held to a goalless draw by the West Midlands side – a result that moves them to seventh in the standings above Manchester United.

Jenas was on commentary for the game on TNT Sports, but fans quickly realised that he was repeating the same mistake during the match.

On several occasions during the first-half he called Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele ‘Luke’ – causing a stir among those watching the game at home.

Lee Tranter tweeted: ‘At what point does Jenas realise it’s Jason Steele not Luke Steele in goal for Brighton?’

Jenas perhaps confused Brighton’s Steele with former goalkeeper Luke Steele who played for clubs including Barnsley, Coventry and Panathinaikos.

He was most famous for his run at Barnsley from 2008 to 2014 where he made 195 appearances for the side and once helped them reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

There were some who brought up Joey Barton’s recent critical comments over female pundits in the men’s game, and questioned when the former midfielder would bring up Jenas’ blunder.

One said: ‘There’s been a recent obsession amongst the ham faced to jump on every single mistake a female pundit makes….

‘So I just want to point out Jermaine Jenas has called Jason Steele ‘Luke Steele’ 3 times now.’

@BOHSvid added: ‘Jermaine Jenas has got Jason Steele’s name wrong twice now. I’m expecting a tweet @JoeyBarton7.’

Another person made light of Jenas taking on hosting duties for motorsport series Formula E.

The X account for Paddy Power posted: ‘Jermaine Jenas has been calling Jason Steele ‘Luke Steele’ for the last five minutes. This is what happens when you bring in Formula-E presenters to commentate on football.’

Others said it was a mix-up with Australian musician Luke Steele, who is lead singer of alternative rock band The Sleepy Jackson and one half of electronic duo Empire of the Sun.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football, launching with a preview show today and every week this season.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube , Apple Music and Spotify

John Earls tweeted: ‘I hope Jermaine Jenas keeps calling Brighton’s keeper Luke Steele because he’s a big Sleepy Jackson fan.’

A Brighton fan wrote: ‘Can someone on @footballontnt tell Jenas that our keeper is called Jason, not Luke Steele.’

It appears Jenas was made aware of his mishap, as he didn’t repeat the mistake during the second-half of the game.
