Jon Moss retires in controversy as Nottingham Forest beat Huddersfield to secure PL promotion

Premier League referee Jon Moss didn’t cover himself in glory after his final match as a referee ended in controversy.

Moss was the heat of the English Football League promotion playoff final between Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest at Wembley on Sunday evening.

Nottingham Forest emerged winners after a narrow 1-0 win over Huddersfield to book their place in the Premier League next season.

However, Huddersfield will feel hard done by after a controversial defeat to Forest means they will remain in the Championship for at least one more season.

Huddersfield were denied two penalty appeals by Moss in the second half with Nottingham Forest leading 1-0.

Moss was unmoved after Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien appeared to be hacked down in the Nottingham Forest box.

Despite their appeals, Moss ensured that his final game as a referee in English football will be one to be remembered for a long time.

Moss is one of three referees expected to retire from the game at the end season. The other two are Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson.

Two-time European champions Nottingham Forest are back with the big boys in the Premier League for the first time since 1998/1999.

Forest defeated Huddersfield by the narrowest of margins thanks to a first half own goal by Levi Colwill.

The former Champions League winners survived a barrage of attacks from the valiant Huddersfield in the second half to secure promotion for the first time in 23 years.
