Kylian Mbappe ‘booed’ after being substituted with Paris Saint-Germain losing at home but replacement proves hero

Kylian Mbappe’s Paris Saint-Germain farewell tour has got off to a rocky start having been booed off in the club’s 1-1 draw to Rennes.

Mbappe was playing his first game in front of his own fans since news broke that he has verbally agreed a deal to join Real Madrid this summer.

The France superstar will fulfil his dreams of becoming a Galactico once his contract at PSG expires at the end of the season.

The deal has not yet been signed, but Mbappe’s dream to joining Madrid and the club’s interest in the 25-year-old has been no secret.

His first game back for PSG since the report emerged came at home to Rennes but it couldn’t have gone worse for the forward.

PSG’s three-game winning streak was snapped Amine Gouiri’s stunning first-half effort with Mbappe enduring a poor afternoon personally.

With the Ligue 1 leaders chasing an equaliser after the break, Mbappe was surprisingly the first player to be hooked by manager Luis Enrique.

Fans inside the Parc des Princes booed their captain as he trudged off to be replaced by Goncalo Ramos.

Mbappe had previously avoided the ire of the PSG faithful, who booed Lionel Messi and Neymar but cheered him during a game days after PSG’s European capitulation against Real Madrid in 2022.

Mbappe managed just two shots but zero on target during the 65 minutes he played against Rennes.

He only had 43 touches with his Expected Goals (xG) reading 0.23, and his Expected Assists (xA) even worse at 0.04.

Speaking of his decision to take Mbappe off, Enrique said post-match: “Sooner or later, at some point, we have to get used to playing without Kylian Mbappe”.

Enrique’s decision proved to be inspired as Mbappe’s replacement Ramos scored a dramatic late equaliser.

The Portugal international, who famously scored a World Cup hat-trick after replacing Cristiano Ronaldo, netted a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

The goal ensured PSG avoided a first defeat in Ligue 1 since September and remain 11 points clear of Brest in second.
