Lawmakers pass resolution to tackle Imo erosion urgently

Hope Uzodimma and erosion

On Tuesday, the Imo House of Assembly adopted a motion urging Governor Hope Uzodimma to rescue the Alaocha Community in Eziama Okwe in Onuimo LGA from erosion.

The motion was sponsored by the member representing the Onuimo constituency, James Esile (APC), who said erosion had almost destroyed the major road in the area.

He said the road connected the local government area with two other local government areas and linked them to Anambra.

Mr Esile said Onuimo people depended on selling their farm produce and relied on that road to transport it. He said the dilapidation of the road had caused a huge setback in agriculture and other economic activities.

The lawmaker added that commercial vehicles transported passengers to Uga, Nnewi and Onitsha in Anambra through the road.

He prayed the house to urge the governor to direct the state ministries of works and environment to visit and tackle the erosion site. He also urged the ministries to provide logistics support to carry out palliative works on the road while finding a permanent solution.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Ehime Mbano, Benard Ozoemelam (APC), stated that palliative measures should be taken before the rainy season.

Chisom Ojukwu of Nkwerre (APC) urged the motion’s sponsor to liaise with representatives of the area in the National Assembly for more impact.

He also urged him to write to the Federal Road Maintenance Agency and National Emergency Management Agency to look into the situation urgently.

In his contribution, the chief whip, Chigozie Nwaneri (APC-Oru East), said that erosion menace was much in the state.

He suggested that officials of the Imo ministries of works and environment should visit all erosion sites in the state for necessary actions.

Following more contributions in favour of the motion, the deputy speaker, Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (APC-Nwangele), who presided, ruled in favour of the motion.
