Manchester United continue their upward climb with big win at Villa Park

Manchester United took a big step to securing European football next season as Scott McTominay’s 86th minute winner gave them a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in just their second home defeat of the entire season.

The Scottish midfielder showed great desire to bully the defender to head home from the six-yard box, after good work by both Diogo Dalot and Kobe Mainoo, for his seventh league goal of the campaign.

It restored United’s lead which was initially given to them by Hojlund, who scored in his fifth consecutive Premier League game, by reacting quickly to the second ball in the penalty area to slot between Emi Martinez’s legs after 17 minutes.

Andre Onana was called upon to make big saves as Erik Ten Hag’s men aimed to ride out the pressure throughout the contest as Villa woke up after going a goal down and swiftly took control of the contest.

But he, and his defense, were finally breached with just over 20 minutes to go as Luiz equalised after terrible United defending. The backline had to deal with a corner but failed to clear the ball and when the second cross came in, Luiz was on hand from close range to turn it into the top-right of the goal.

Villa carried on creating chances and the Dutch coach of United realized he had something to do if they were to secure even one point from the game between fifth and sixth in the league and on came McTominay.

He, perhaps, wasn’t expected to score but that’s exactly what he did 13 minutes after coming on to send the away end into ecstasy and deliver a big three points to the Old Trafford team, who move to within five points of Villa and four points of Tottenham Hotspur in the final Champions League spot.
