Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal’s ability ‘scoring goals in various ways’ after beating Newcastle 4-1, and urges them to continue streak which has seen 25 Premier League goals so far this year

Mikel Arteta said his team are scoring for fun in a variety of ways after Arsenal took themselves to 25 Premier League goals scored in 2024 and only three conceded.

Arsenal trounced Newcastle courtesy of goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Jakub Kiwior and a little help from Sven Botman as he inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net. Two of those came from corners as the club’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover yet again had a crucial say in this victory.

Asked if Jover has a nice goal bonus built into his contract, Arteta joked: ‘That is for the owner to respond! We are scoring goals in various ways. We have to continue to do that.

‘It was a great performance. The intensity, the commitment, the aggression – we got rewarded. We cannot cry because of the result (the 1-0 Champions League loss at Porto on Wednesday). We showed how much we want it. We go again.

‘There is no secret. We are scoring goals in various ways. When we score, we want to go for the second, the third, the fourth. Today could have been much more as well.’

Jorginho was among those who put in an impressive performance at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta likes to rely on him in big matches, with the 32-year-old’s previous three starts coming against Liverpool twice and PSV Eindhoven.

‘He was magnificent,’ Arteta said. ‘We raised the bar again, because Newcastle are a top side, really well coached, and it is difficult to do what we did.’

Hailing the electricity inside the Emirates, Arteta added: ‘We want the best club in the world. To be the best club in the world, we have to have the best atmosphere.’

Eddie Howe also praised Newcastle’s supporters, who could be seen jumping and singing at full-time despite this defeat. ‘They were magnificent for us again,’ Howe said. ‘We know how difficult it has been to get here, and the fact they cannot get home tonight.’
