Nasarawa: Police investigate alleged harassment of nursing students by officers

The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged harassment and intimidation of students at the College of Nursing and Midwifery Science in Lafia, the state capital.

This followed a protest by the students on Monday, decrying the molestation of two of their colleagues by officers of the Nigerian Police.

According to a protester, the incident occurred around 10:00 pm on Saturday, March 9, when two students, Joseph Musa and Joy Ishaya, were harassed and molested by police officers at a checkpoint while on their way coming from the class from night-reading .

“There has been a series of harassment on the students, such as stopping us from taking motorcycle taxis to school, physical assaults on males students and use of unprintable comments on female students, thereby making life unbearable for us, especially when accessing our routes to the school environment,” the protester stated.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the accused officer had been identified and would face sanctioned if found guilty.

Nansel stated that the Commissioner of Police has scheduled a meeting with the students and school management to address the issue further.

“The Command received their complaint yesterday, and the Commissioner of Police held a meeting with the students and school management on separate occasions. He rescheduled another meeting with both parties on Thursday this week.

“The allegation is being investigated and the CP assures the students that justice will be served.

“The officer that the students accused was identified and an investigation has commenced. He will face sanctions if found wanting,” he added.

The PPRO assured the students that justice would be served, stating that the Command takes such allegations seriously and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including students.
