President Sam Ocheho of the Handball Federation of Nigeria expressed delight at the team’s performance in the just-concluded African Games in Ghana, where the men’s team clinched a bronze medal.
The victory marked Nigeria’s first handball medal in 21 years, a significant achievement for the sport in the country.

Ocheho highlighted the team’s accomplishment, emphasizing their successful fulfillment of the target to secure a medal. He noted the significance of the achievement, particularly considering the team’s youthfulness, with the average age being the youngest in the tournament.
In the third-place match, Nigeria’s male handball team showcased their prowess by defeating Benin Republic 38-20, securing the bronze medal. The victory was a testament to the team’s dedication and improvement, signaling a resurgence for Nigerian handball on the continental stage.
“This is actually the first medal handball is going to be picking in the last 21 years,” Ocheho remarked. “The last time we won was when Nigeria hosted COJA in 2003. And since then, we’ve not won any medal. So, you can see why the boys are excited.”
The president expressed optimism for the future, affirming the federation’s commitment to nurturing young talents and fostering continuous improvement in the sport. With this historic achievement, Nigerian handball aims to reclaim its prominent position in African handball competitions.
