The passing of veteran actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has left a profound impact on the Nigerian film industry, with filmmakers, industry watchers, and fans of Nollywood paying heartfelt tributes to the late comic actor.

Okafor, who had been battling illness since 2023, reportedly succumbed to cardiac arrest at the age of 62 on Saturday at Evercare Hospital in Lekki, Lagos State. The news of his demise has triggered an outpouring of grief from industry stakeholders, eminent Nigerians, and fans alike.

Reflecting on Okafor’s contributions to Nollywood, Blessing Ebigieson, National President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), emphasized the late actor’s resilience and passion for his craft. Despite his health challenges, Okafor remained committed to his work, leaving behind a legacy that will endure.

Emma Eyaba, Chairman of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) FCT chapter, highlighted Okafor’s pivotal role in the growth of the Nigerian film industry. He noted the actor’s dedication to his profession, even amidst health struggles, recalling Okafor’s intended participation in the sequel to the Nollywood classic ‘Issakaba’.

Fans of the late actor took to social media to express their condolences and reminisce about Okafor’s iconic roles in Nigerian cinema. Messages poured in on X (formerly Twitter), with many recalling fond memories of watching his movies and praising his comedic talent.

John Okafor, born in 1961 in Enugu State, gained fame for his portrayal of the character ‘Mr. Ibu’ in the eponymous film series. He appeared in over 200 Nollywood films, captivating audiences with his humor and charisma. Beyond acting, Okafor briefly ventured into music, releasing songs in 2020.

In 2023, Okafor revealed his battle with a debilitating ailment that led to the amputation of one of his legs. Despite undergoing surgery, he ultimately succumbed to his health challenges, leaving behind a rich legacy in Nigerian entertainment.

His passing marks the end of an era in Nollywood, but his contributions to the industry will continue to be celebrated and remembered by generations to come.
