Police Officer Caught Beating Civilian With Cutlass Dismissed

An officer of the Nigerian Police Force seen in a viral video beating a civilian with cutlass has been relieved from service, Naija News reports.

Nigerians have expressed anger and called for justice after the erring officer, PC Liyomo Okoi, was spotted in the video clip which went viral on July 31, 2022.

Last week, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba expressed interest in the case and summoned Liyomo to his office in Abuja.

In a tweet on Friday, the force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP had summoned Liyomo to Abuja on Thursday and condemned him for his actions.

Subsequently, on Monday, Adejobi confirmed that the force has fired the erring officer for his gross misconduct.

Adejobi, via his official Twitter page on Monday, wrote: “GROSS MISCONDUCT: NPF has dismissed PC LIYOMO OKOI, Force No 524503, attached to Ekori Divisional Police Headquarters, Cross River State, who was captured in a video that went viral on 31st July, 2022, where he was flogging a civilian with a cutlass.”

He confirmed that Liyomo ceased to be a member of the police force with effect from today 8th August 2022.

Adejobi urged members of the public not to have any official dealings or transactions with him henceforth.

“We will always do the needful to sanitise the NPF and uphold the standards and values of the Nigeria Police Force. Thanks,” the PPRO said.
