Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace suffered a terrible afternoon as they were thrashed by their bitter rivals Brighton, who responded superbly to their midweek collapse at Luton.

From the moment Lewis Dunk headed them in front just three minutes in, Brighton were in command and further goals by Jack Hinshelwood and Facundo Buonanotte crushed Palace.

Although Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal offered a glimmer of hope, a fourth by Joao Pedro had the Amex in full gloating mood.

Where to even begin with that epic eight-goal thriller at St James’ Park this afternoon?

Newcastle went in front through Sean Longstaff and the same man restored their early advantage after Luton levelled through Gabriel Osho.

Ross Barkley drew the Hatters level again five minutes before half-time and they then took control through a Carlton Morris penalty and another goal by Elijah Adebayo after the break.

But Newcastle had plenty left and after Kieran Trippier reduced the deficit, Harvey Barnes marked his return from a long injury lay-off by snatching a point.

A dramatic ending at Turf Moor as two goals from Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana earned what could yet prove to be a crucial point in Burnley’s bid to escape relegation.

They trailed to goals by Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Muniz from the first-half with Fulham in firm control.

But Fofana sent the stadium into raptures by first halving the deficit with 19 minutes to play and then equalising in stoppage time.

That epic draw at St James’ Park means Newcastle miss the chance to move back above Manchester United into eighth place in the table.

Brighton move ahead of both United’s, however, and are now seventh following their emphatic win over Crystal Palace.

Down at the bottom, Burnley’s late point moves them to 13 overall but they remain seven from safety.

Luton only took a point and remain a point above the drop zone after 18th-placed Everton drew earlier.

Palace are 14th after their defeat with a less-than-comfortable five-point gap to Everton.

What an outstanding game of Premier League football and it ends all-square.

There was one final late chance for Luton’s Chiedozie Ogbene, who has been brilliant, to win it but his volley was directed straight at Martin Dubravka.

But the draw seems like the fitting outcome after such a ding-ding contest.

Still playing at St James’ Park… both sides still going for it.

Serious questions have to be asked now about Roy Hodgson’s future at Selhurst Park after Palace crashed to this heavy loss to their bitter rivals.

Brighton in total control through helped by Lewis Dunk heading them in front in the early stages.

Further strikes by Jack Hinshelwood, Facundo Buonanotte and Joao Pedro sealed a memorable win.

All over at Turf Moor and Burnley have grabbed a point in a comeback from two goals down that could yet prove crucial in their relegation escape attempt.

Fulham were in absolutely control thanks to goals by Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Muniz, only for new boy David Datro Fofana to haul the Clarets back to parity for a point.

This game remains remarkable open, even now. Bruno Guimaraes sees a shot deflected behind and then Tino Livramento make a crucial intervention to prevent Luton getting through.

It’s the Chelsea loanee Fofana once again and all-square. He bundled the ball home after Wilson Odobert crossed from the left and looks to have earned a draw.

Elijah Adebayo, who put Luton 4-2 ahead some 20 minutes ago, is taken off and Cauley Woodrow replaces him.

That’ll do it now for Brighton as Joao Pedro cheekily holds up four fingers to the Palace fans.

Brighton will certainly remember this derby very fondly.

Brilliant play by Bruno Guimaraes and he delivers a brilliant cross that is begging to be put away – but Callum Wilson can’t quite get the right touch.

Luton have hit four for the second time in a week and it’s Elijah Adebayo, taking advantage of some more poor positioning from the Newcastle defence to slot home despite the tight angle.

They’re on course for a magnificent win.

He took the penalty the first time, sent Dubravka the wrong way after a stuttering run-up, but it was a re-take because of encroachment by Adebayo on the line.

So Morris stepped up again, stuttering run-up again, and he dispatched it just as clinically.

VAR Michael Salisbury is checking for a possible penalty for Luton. The question is whether Dan Burn still had his hand on the shoulder of the speedy Ogbene as he crossed the line into the penalty box.

Brighton looking to rub it in even more against Palace in the A23 derby.

LEWIS STEELE AT GOODISON PARK: A theme of the first year of Sean Dyche’s reign at Goodison Park has seen the Everton manager being haunted by the past, mainly in the form of being punished for financial wrongdoings that happened long before he took the hot seat on Merseyside.

That theme long looked like it was set to continue in this match, with former Everton favourite Richarlison returning to be the scourge of Goodison Park.

The Brazilian took just four minutes of his return to his old employers to show what they are missing and he later completed his brace.

The pressure is really on Palace boss Roy Hodgson with his team three goals behind against arch-rivals Brighton at the break.

Brighton dominant with Lewis Dunk heading in an early opener, Jack Hinshelwood grabbing the second and Facundo Buounanotte making it three.

Disaster for Palace, joy for Brighton so far.

That brings a close to a brilliant first-half at St James’ Park.

Newcastle led early on when Sean Longstaff turned home a cross by Kieran Trippier. Luton were very much in the contest though and levelled when Gabriel Osho was alert to convert from close range following a corner.

That parity lasted just a few seconds because Longstaff restored Newcastle’s lead but Ross Barkley made it 2-2 and it’s anyone’s game.

Into four minutes of stoppage time at the end of what has been an absorbing first-half at St James’ Park.

They’re level again and Luton very much in this contest.

Luton come down the left with Trippier struggling to cope with Dougherty, whose shot was pushed out by Dubravka to Ross Barkley inside the six-yard box and he finished well.

Newcastle with a great chance to make it three as we approach the break.

A break down the right with Jacob Murphy, pulled back into Anthony Gordon and his shot is blocked by Teden Mengi.

Goodness me – this is very quickly turning into a nightmare afternoon for Palace against their bitter rivals.

Mere seconds after the second went in, Brighton grab their third courtesy of Buonanotte.

All Palace’s own doing as well – they’re caught in possession inside their own half and Brighton work it before Buonanotte curls home his shot.

Brighton have doubled their lead and Palace in deep trouble in the derby.

It’s the 18-year-old midfielder Jack Hinshelwood, heading back across goal after Tariq Lamptey delivered the dinked cross.

Definitely more goals in the offing on Tyneside. Luton come forward again in this open contest with Alfie Dougherty finding Elijah Adebayo but the forward can’t quite get his shot away.

More bad news for Palace because Marc Guehi, their key defender, is going off injured.

This give Adam Wharton, newly arrived from Blackburn, the chance to make his debut.

The goals flying in this afternoon and Luton’s parity lasts only a couple of minutes.

They had been playing a high line and Newcastle take advantage with Langstaff at the double.

Miguel Almiron found Anthony Gordon on the left and his pace was too much for Osho. Anthony shot and Thomas Kaminski saved, only for the ball to come out to Longstaff, who made no mistake.

From bad to worse for Burnley – Muniz has doubled Fulham’s lead.

It’s a first Premier League goal for Muniz, who chases down a ball played over the top and chips it nicely over James Trafford into the net.

It’s already looking like a very long afternoon again for the Clarets.

Luton responded really well to falling behind and the persistence there of Gabriel Osho has earned them a leveller.

He was alert to the danger when the ball came back off the crossbar after a header by Carlton Morris following a corner.

Spoke too soon… because there is the first goal at Turf Moor.

And it’s gone to Fulham. Joao Palhinha with it, a flicked header to dispatch a corner sent in invitingly by Andreas Pereira.

No breakthrough yet at Turf Moor but Sander Berge looking to drive Burnley forward – his shot from outside the box is low but comfortable for Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

Luton have responded well to falling behind and their travelling fans up in the Gods at St James’ can be heard.

They win a corner, Morris gets up with a looping header but Martin Dubravka clutches it.

Ogbene once again caused some issues for the Newcastle defence. This time he gets the cross in after dribbling into the box on the right. Newcastle deal with it but it’s been a frenetic start.

Burnley have made the brighter start against Fulham and Vitinho has seen an early shot deflected wide.

The deadlock broken at St James’ Park and the place has erupted because it’s Newcastle who have the goal.

All made by Kieran Trippier, storming down the right to cross, and Sean Longstaff burst between two Luton defender to produce the assured finish.

A lively opening from both Newcastle and Luton at St James’. They both look bang up for it and have enjoyed early advances into opposition final thirds.

Brighton have turned selling their best and brightest stars and looking like it never bothers them into an art form.

Whether it was Marc Cucurella to Chelsea, or Yves Bissouma to Tottenham, or Ben White to Arsenal, this was a runaway train that refused to be derailed. Yet now, amid a run of three wins in 16 Premier League games — their opponents today Crystal Palace have won four in 16 — you have to wonder if that policy is catching up with them.

They sold Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister in the summer and, amid that absence of control in midfield, opponents look like they are figuring out how to beat Roberto De Zerbi’s approach.

A really entertaining lunchtime kick-off at Goodison Park has just concluded.

It finished 2-2 between Everton and Tottenham with Jarrad Branthwaite nicking a stoppage time point for the Toffees in their relegation battle.

JACK GAUGHAN: Vincent Kompany believes that Burnley’s approach to the transfer market since promotion stands them in good stead for the future – even if they go down.

Now eight points from safety, the Clarets need to string victories together if they are to preserve their Premier League status – starting with Saturday’s home clash against Fulham.

Kompany is attempting to tighten up a side leaking more than two goals a game with the deadline-day loan signings of defenders Lorenz Assignon and Maxime Esteve.

For many outsiders, it’s a curious old rivalry given the 45-mile distance between the two clubs.

It looks like the police are taking no chances ahead of kick-off at the Amex.

CRAIG HOPE: Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall says he does not care if he upsets opposition staff, but insists he would never snub a handshake like Unai Emery did to him this week.

He also believes the Premier League rule change allowing only one coach to stand in the technical area was specifically brought in to impact on him and Eddie Howe.

Tindall, though, is not changing for anyone. The No.2, who has taken on cult status on Tyneside and beyond because of his touchline presence, stood in for Howe when the manager was missing because of illness during Friday’s media call.
