The Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently meeting with some critical stakeholders as part of efforts to resolve the political crisis in Niger Republic.

In attendance at the ongoing meeting are the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray; leader of the ECOWAS delegation to Niger Republic’s military junta, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

At the time of filing this report no detail had been issued concerning the meeting, however, the meeting would be the next step towards resolving the political crisis in Niger.

AU Suspends Niger Republic, Call For President Bazoum’s Release

In a related development, African Union has suspended the Niger Republic.

The decision was reached by AU following the continuous detention of the ousting and continuous detention of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum by a military junta.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, AU said the Republic of Niger is now suspended from all its activities, regretting the military coup on July 26, which has put the African country in crisis mode for weeks now.

The AU reiterated calls for the coup leaders to release Bazoum and return to their barracks.
