Reforms in communication sector strategic to nation’s operational efficiency – Lawmaker Agbese

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Phillip Agbese has said the current reforms in the communication sector would strategically improve operational efficiency in all sectors of the economy.

He said, President Bola Tinubu who had in the last ten months been committed to reforms not only in the communication sector but also in other agencies of government, was the best way out of the economic and social quagmire which may take a few months to yield fruitful results.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the lawmaker explained that notable events have taken place in the country’s communication sector, expectedly, it was also taking place in other sectors, while pledging that the reforms will be backed by legislative instruments in places needed.

He said lawmakers in the lower legislative Chamber who have oversight functions have observed that the new leadership in the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, did not waste time to come up with plans on repositioning the regulatory agency after their appointment.
He said: “The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, hit the ground running with plans and programmes geared towards maximizing the opportunities in the communications sector for sustainable growth and development.”

“The missing link in the development circle in Nigeria is leadership. Purposeful leaders can create a lasting legacy. They can make a difference that will be felt for generations. I am glad that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu displayed this attribute when choosing persons occupying positions of authority in the country.”

According to the lawmaker, notable gains of “not the business as usual” were beginning to be felt at the NCC, adding that there was some level of professionalism, passion, and dedication to the conduct of government business in the agency lately.

He added: “Dr Aminu Maida has displayed leadership. Under him, the communication sector in Nigeria has experienced a leap in productivity. This indicates his quality of thought and commitment to bringing his expertise to bear on the task of re-positioning

“These reforms are positioned to accelerate the diversification of the Nigerian economy by enhancing productivity in critical sectors. Communication is the economy’s engine for change and gateway to new resources and opportunities. It connects key economic players, promotes dialogue, and informs their policies.”

Agbese urged Nigerians to support reforms which he believed would yield results at the appropriate time.
