Roberto de Zerbi ‘focused’ on Brighton amid Liverpool speculation

Brighton are seventh in the Premier League and remain in this season’s FA Cup and Europa League

Roberto de Zerbi says his “focus” is on Brighton amid speculation over who will succeed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Italian boss, 44, led Brighton to a sixth-place Premier League finish last season as they qualified for Europe for the first time in their history.

He has received widespread praise for their style of football and saw them win 5-2 at Sheffield United on Saturday to reach the FA Cup fifth round.

Klopp announced on Friday he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

But when asked about the upcoming Anfield vacancy after the Seagulls’ FA Cup win, De Zerbi said: “Now it is not my focus. My focus is on my players, my team, my fans, my club.

“We have a lot of things to reach this season and then we will see [about] the future.”

Former Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo boss De Zerbi succeeded Graham Potter as Brighton manager in September 2022, signing a four-year contract at the Amex Stadium.

A sixth-place league finish in his first season in charge secured Europa League football – and they will feature in the last 16 of that competition in March after winning their group.

Former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp, 56, took over at Anfield in 2015 and has since led the club to its sixth Champions League title and first English league title in 30 years.

But the German, whose contract was due to run until 2026, said he will not have a say in who succeeds him this summer.
