Roy Keane jokes he will never forgive Wayne Rooney for Man United away trip hijinks

Wayne Rooney has hilariously revealed he left Roy Keane ‘fuming’ by changing the TV channel on a Manchester United away trip.

The England legend joined the Premier League giants in 2004 at the age of 18 and spent just over a year with Keane.

Although the then United captain was 14 years Rooney’s senior, that didn’t stop him from pulling a cheeky prank on the midfielder.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, he recalled how he quickly learned not to mess with the Irishman before a match at Newcastle.

“I won’t forgive you for taking the remote control. You tell it, tell the truth will you?” said Keane.

And Rooney explained: “So he’s watching rugby league, I’m sat there, it was Newcastle away, you had to go out the room to get your food, I think it was my second or third game.

“So he’s gone out, I’ve changed over to X Factor, I’ve hid the remote so he’s come back in and he’s fuming. I was just sat there like… the next thing he’s gone up to pull the plug out!

“I don’t even know if he knows, about midnight, the club security knocked at my door and asked for the remote.”

“That was nothing to do with me,” insisted Keane, before Rooney reiterated: “He was fuming.”

Keane also offered his side of the story and said: “I like my rugby league, it was a good game on. I came back and I knew the lads were up to no good, the usual stuff, very immature these lads.

“‘Where’s the control now?’ F****** X Factor was on. So anyway, I wouldn’t say I stormed off to bed but I went to bad as I had to. I knew he’d done it, again he was new to the club, I thought, ‘I’ll give him a chance, I don’t want to be too hard on him.’

“The next morning we’re down for breakfast, he comes over to me and says, ‘Did you find them controls?’ I was going to be polite to him but when he said something, I went, ‘Go f*** yourself.'”

Rooney and Keane both played in the eventual match at Newcastle, with the former scoring two of United’s goals in a 3-1 win.

The duo made 39 appearances together for the club before Keane left in 2005 following a soured relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.
