Roy Keane slams Tottenham’s ‘Spursy’ defending as they slip to third straight defeat

Roy Keane didn’t hold back in his assessment of Tottenham after their defeat to Aston Villa… labelling their defensive play as ‘Spursy.’

Spurs slipped to their third straight defeat as they were beaten 2-1 at home to Aston Villa.

Giovani Lo Celso put Ange Postecoglou’s men in front midway through the first half but they were pegged back by Pau Torres in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Ollie Watkins then poked home what proved to be the winner on 61 minutes and it was this strike which prompted Keane, who grew up a Spurs fan, to unleash his brutal verdict.

Keane said on Sky Sports: “Lovely goal from Villa, lovely finish, but defensively from Spurs, woah, really…. Spursy.”

Postecoglou took a more diplomatic approach when assessing Spurs’ performance, saying: “The outcome is disappointing for the fans and the players. The players did a great job in playing the way we want to play football, but it’s about fine margins.

“We were up against a good Villa side and I thought some of our football is as good as it’s been all year.”

He added: “Yeah, again, the outcome is obviously disappointing. Disappointing for our fans and particularly disappointing for our players because I felt the players we had out there did a fantastic job playing the football we want to play.

“On any other day it’s probably a game we win comfortably. It’s about those fine margins in football.

“Not happy with the defeat but as a manager when you put a team out there, what you’re looking for is some real belief and intent and the team we want to be and I saw loads of that today.”

Keane used the word that all Spurs fans are bugged with by rival fans to describe the team's defending

The defeat means Spurs, who were top of the Premier League at the beginning of the month, fall down to fifth in the table.

The way they’ve gone from Premier League pacesetters to no longer being in the Champions League spots in a matter of weeks will be alarming to all those of a Spurs persuasion… but it is quite ‘Spursy’.
