Shaquille O’Neal is worried about Jake Paul, win or lose against boxing legend Mike Tyson.
While the boxing match will surely generate worldwide viewing since it will be televised on Netflix, Shaq believes Paul has placed himself in a classic lose-lose situation.
If Paul beats Tyson – who will be 58 – in the ring on July 20 at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Texas, then everyone will immediately point out the 27-year-old beat a man who is 31 years older than him.
If Paul loses to Tyson, who once was the undisputed best boxer in the world, then Paul will have been embarrassed before a global streaming audience.
Either way, it’s clear O’Neal is not a big fan of Paul agreeing to fight a man who is three decades older than him.
“If you’re Jake Paul, do you feel good about beating a 57-year-old Mike Tyson?” O’Neal said on The Big Podcast.
While his co-hosts seemed intrigued by the fight, Shaq was less than impressed.
The 15-time NBA All-Star and four-time NBA champion believes that Tyson still has the potential to deliver crunching blows in the ring.
“I know he can,” O’Neal said.
But a 30-year age gap that clearly favors the former Disney Channel actor is impossible to ignore.
“I’m just saying, if Jake Paul does happen to win, does he really feel good about beating a 57-year-old?” O’Neal said. “I would feel s*****. I really would.”
While the NBA Superman hopes that Tyson can rediscover his old magic with the gloves on July 20, O’Neal knows that one person always wins in sports.
Father Time.
“If we could all do it, I’d still be playing,” O’Neal, who was the first pick in the 1992 NBA Draft and won three NBA Finals.
He’s not the only one to point out the ages, with UFC CEO Dana White highlighting it on a number of occasions, while also dismissing the idea that Paul has ambitions of winning a world title.
“He doesn’t want to be a respected fighter. What Jake wants is to make money, people who follow Jake Paul don’t buy Jake Paul’s fights so Jake Paul has to fight people who can sell actual pay-per-views.”
Tyson, meanwhile, is someone who was a huge PPV draw after making his pro boxing debut in 1985 and became a worldwide sensation.
He won his first 19 bouts by knockout, with 12 fights finishing before the first round was complete.
Tyson became the youngest boxer to win a world heavyweight title — 38 years ago.
Iron Mike could earn up to $20 million for his upcoming fight vs Paul.
The man who knocked out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds but was upset by Buster Douglas has made more than $400 million in his controversial boxing career.
