Sporting Kansas City defender Kortne Ford to miss 2023 season after surgery

Sporting Kansas City will likely be without Kortne Ford for the entire 2023 MLS season after undergoing successful surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Ford sustained the injury in a preseason friendly against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, with the procedure performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kirk McCullough at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute.

With the 27-year-old sidelined, SKC’s center-back options are reduced to veteran Andreu Fontas – formerly of Barcelona – U22 Initiative signing Robert Voloder, and 2023 MLS SuperDraft pick Chris Rindov.

Ford arrived at Sporting Kansas City early last season, going on to make 16 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal. However, he missed much of the campaign due to a 10-game suspension for violating the MLS Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Policy.

With Ford’s injury, Sporting Kansas City will likely be forced to review their options at center-back ahead of their 2023 season opener away at the Portland Timbers on February 25.
