St. Louis CITY SC acquire Samuel Adeniran in trade with Seattle Sounders

St. Louis CITY SC have bolstered their forward line with the acquisition of Samuel Adeniran from the Seattle Sounders.

Major League Soccer’s latest expansion club will send $100k in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM) to the Sounders, with an additional $100k GAM to be paid in 2024 should Adeniran meet certain performance criteria.

The Sounders retain a percentage of any future transfer fee through the 2025 MLS season.

“We looked at Samuel for a long time and thought that he could be an asset for our team ahead of the 2023 season,” St. Louis sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said in a club press release.

“His 6-foot-4 frame boasts a strong striker frame that commands attention and has proven his scoring skills the last two years.”

Adeniran arrived in the United States with Seattle’s USL affiliate, Tacoma Defiance, in March 2021 following spells across Europe in Portugal, Spain, and Germany.

The 24-year-old went on to register 15 goals and three assists in 38 appearances for the Defiance, as well as another 12 goals and two assists in 23 games while on loan at San Antonio FC.

His loan to San Antonio came after he’d been promoted to the Sounders first team roster, where he managed six appearances across all competitions, though he failed to register a direct goal contribution.

“We’d like to thank Sam for his hard work and professionalism with the organization,” Seattle general manager and chief soccer officer Craig Waibel said in a club press release. “We wish him nothing but the best in his next opportunity.”

Adeniran joins Brazilian Designated Player Klauss and United States international Nicholas Gioacchini on St. Louis’ forward line.
