‘This Is Total Madness’ – Peter Okoye Reacts As ECOWAS Puts Military On Standby Against Niger Junta

Award-winning Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye, better known as Mr P, has reacted to the resolutions made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the extraordinary meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Naija News reported that the President of ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray, had said the regional bloc had put troops on standby to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

Touray stated that the regional bloc maintained a stand against the military government in Niger and directed immediate enforcement and monitoring of sanctions on the military junta.

He added that ECOWAS underscores its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.

Reacting via his Twitter page, Mr P described the latest development as ‘total madness’.

The singer further accused the West African body of joining the West to fight fellow Africans.

He wrote, “Africa joins the west to fight Africa. Total madness.”

Military Intervention Last Option To Remove Military Junta

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said the deployment of the Nigerian troops would be the last option in removing the military junta and restoring democratic rule in Niger Republic.

Naija News reports that the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Lamuwa, made this known on Friday in a chat with the diplomatic corps on the political situation in Niger.

Lamuwa said the deployment of troops would be the last resort in restoring democracy in Niger if diplomatic engagements with the junta fail, adding that President Bola Tinubu will ensure that the ousted President, Mohamed Bazoum, is restored back to power.

He also asked the international community to continue to show solidarity with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in the plan to restore democratic rule in Niger.
