Tigres UANL part ways with head coach Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera

Tigres UANL has parted ways with head coach Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera, effective immediately.

“Club Tigres announces that after realizing a profound analysis, the decision to conclude the relationship with head coach Miguel Herrera and his staff has been made. We thank Miguel and his technical staff for the professionalism shown throughout the past three tournaments in which he led Tigres, and wish him success in his future projects,” said the club in a statement.

The news comes after a disappointing 2022 Apertura campaign. Though the team concluded the season in fifth place on the table with 30 points in 17 games and a record of 9W-5L-3D, Tigres fell to Pachuca in the playoffs’ quarterfinals.

Following the defeat, Piojo Herrera blamed an “aged roster.”

He now departs the club after having led Tigres in the past three tournaments.

He first joined ahead of the 2021 Liga MX Apertura, propelling the team to fourth on the table in his initial year before drastically improving. The following campaign, Piojo Herrera managed to lead Tigres to second on the table, before a standout postseason run that saw a semifinal appearance against Atlas FC.

Despite reaching the playoffs on various occasions, Piojo Herrera did not win a trophy with Tigres UANL.

The team will now begin the search for a new manager.

“We will announce the new head coach and staff in the coming days.”
