Tom Lockyer and the miracle of his resurrection on the pitch: I was dead for two minutes and 40 seconds

Tom Lockyer, the Luton Town player who suffered a cardiac arrest during his side’s Premier League match against Bournemouth, returned to the Vitality Stadium where the miracle of his resurrection took place.

The Welsh footballer was reunited with the medical staff who brought him back to life, although he suffered in Bournemouth‘s 0-3 comeback to 4-3 against his Luton Town side.

“I’m sure it was a much more frightening moment for them than it was for me. I don’t know what happened, but I’ve had surgery and it shouldn’t happen again. I had an episode of atrial fibrillation. This is when the top part of my heart was beating four times faster than it should. My heart stopped for two minutes and 40 seconds. I know I literally died,” Tom Lockyer told Sky News in February 2024.

Tom Lockyer gave an interview to the Premier Legue in which he explained that “I was clinically dead for two minutes and 40 seconds. Yeah, it’s quite surreal. [Christian] Eriksen was five minutes and he was last before me. I was two minutes and the guy before Eriksen, Fabrice Muamba, was 87 seconds or something crazy. So, the trend is that it’s going in the right direction.”

Tom Lockyer shows off his ‘resuscitator’

A few weeks ago Tom Lockyer showed off the ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) he has had implanted in his torso after suffering two collapses in seven months.

“This is my battle wound… My defibrillator is there, as you can see, there’s a wire that goes through and into the heart in case it ever needs to be activated,” Lockyer told Sky Sports, showing the scars on his torso and the location of the defibrillator (the device protrudes under his left armpit, with a scar marking the incision made to place it).

The aim of the defibrillator is to get his heart working again should it stop again, eliminating the need to wait for a defibrillator to arrive on the scene and hopefully save his life.
