Tonto Dikeh's undying love for controversies may be getting boring [Pulse Editor's Opinion]

It felt like one of Nollywood’s princesses was about to see her world crash.

Let’s backtrack a bit, that marriage was marred with so much dent and crisis that it was just a matter of time before the inevitable happened.

It was big news! Dikeh was on social media sharing information about how she was being assaulted by her former husband.

Everyone – well, maybe not everyone including Churchill’s family – shared her sentiment. We cried or ‘crewd’ as they say on Twitter streets with the actress.

All we wanted to read was how the movie star was allegedly deceived by Churchill, who claimed to the son of the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

At this point, everyone in the entertainment space crowned her as the most controversial celebrity in town. No one could match her game.

Imagine waking up to a YouTube video of your favourite controversial celebrity dragging her ex-husband. I kid you not, Tonto literally told the world that her ex-husband had ejaculation issues.

That was the height of it.

For a man of that status in society, one wondered how he was going to survive the slaughter that was going to follow on social media.

Shockingly, Churchill was Tonto’s match as they both washed their heap of dirty linens to the shock, disdain and even amusement of the public.

For many, it was too early to start the lovey-dovey thingy, especially on social media. With full knowledge of where her last relationship landed her.

Men and women in love are the last people you want to feed thoughts of doubts – tt never works. Tonto told the world that this man was her world and the best thing to happen to her family.

In less than two months that relationship crashed. Yet again we were all plagued with her social media drama. Let’s not give all the credit to Tonto as Kpokpogri was armed with the same weapons as the actress for the battle.

Maybe this time, Tonto felt like we were still stuck in 2017, when she could hold social media hostage with her messy relationships.

Yes, we all want to hopelessly fall in love with the right person. But when it doesn’t turn out as planned, it is only right to move on. Obviously, the Petrochemical Engineer turned actress has a thing for holding tight to rotten food.

She refused to move on from her failed relationship and continues to drag the hell out of the former ‘best thing that ever happened to her.’

Here are a few things Tonto Dikeh has got to know; it is becoming stale. We know you can keep your seven million followers on social media awake, even late in the night with gist about your ex.

You can make fun and drag everyone on social media, even have dirty secrets of many, but sincerely, it is becoming boring.

For many, her continuous moves on dragging her ex may be the content they signed for… which is cool. Nobody owns your page. But just for the sake of those who see you as a role model, put a pump on the brake.

Does controversy benefit celebrities?

In the case of celebrities, they are also socialites, who need to stay relevant in the spotlight. The notoriety can inform brand deals, great shows and influencer revenue. But when the cost is at the expense of the brand she’s built in over 15 years of presence in the spotlight, it might be time to slow down.

Even though it could be about her status as a role model and mother, it’s also about how people perceive her. A lot of young Nigerians are too young to remember that Dikeh was a fantastic actor, who interpreted each role with dexterity and intent. After all, the country is 53% of the country is under 19 years old.

She doesn’t need to totally take this advice, but she can weigh it, as she creeps along. She is no longer the young woman who constantly created controversy on Twitter in the early 2000s. In fact, when she slowed down between 2013 and 2016, she came back as a winner, with endorsements, cars and a relationship she bragged about.

Now might be the time to take another break.
