Top 5 transfer flops of the 2021/22 La Liga season

Top 5 transfer flops of the 2021/22 La Liga season

The American arrived at Mallorca after having a somewhat breakout season at German club, Schalke 04, where he scored a number of goals to catch the attention of clubs in Europe.

He would move to Mallorca, but it would not make a lot of sense for the American as he made only 5 appearances, being an unused sub for most parts of the season or not even being in the squad at all.

Another player who was sought after, especially after his stellar performance at the 2020 Olympics where he won the gold medal with Brazil and played a key role in their victory.

However his move to the capital club has not provided the level of spark that many believed it would, especially with his previous performance.

This was also hampered by a knee injury which he suffered sometime in the season, making it difficult for him to catch a rhythm, as he could only be on the starting sheet 22% of the time this season.

The speedy Spaniard had one of the best introductions into the La Liga, taking his first few games by storm and stretching defenders with his pace. However later on in his spell, he could not nail a starting shirt.

He made 11 appearances for Barcelona, starting only 24% of the games and playing only 25% of the total minutes, showing how much his performances dwindled, as well as the fact that it coincided with the return to form of French winger, Ousmane Dembele who became a key player in Xavi’s plans.

When Manchester United tried to find options for the Frenchman, there were very few options and few clubs willing to take him on. However, after several negotiations, Sevilla took him on.

His time at the club has however been very underwhelming, finding the back of the net not once in his 9 appearances for the club following his January move.

For a player whose career seems to be on the downward spiral, it becomes rather concerning as he needs to find his feet as fast as he can or he would be dealing with a lot more than finding a decent club to play football for next season.

One of the most sought after midfielders in Europe before his move to Atletico Madrid, the Argentine had impressed while at Italian club, Udinese, where he was captain of the club and was also a very important member of the squad, scoring crucial goals and also leading his team to unlikely wins as well as keeping them up in the Serie A.

While in Italy, one of the things RDP enjoyed was being able to freely control the midfield and also play effectively.

He could score different types of goals – freekicks, curlers and the likes. however these have been far and few between, scoring just 3 goals and providing 2 assists in 36 matches for the Madrid club.

The entire blame would however not go to the player, as the manager has also failed to fully bring out his potential and explore his creative and attacking talents just like players like Joao Felix. One thing is sure though, RDP can stay fit, and hopefully he gets his form back.
