Tottenham continue unbeaten streak, now sit atop Premier League table

Tottenham Hotspur’s first game back from the international break saw the club continue their unprecedented EPL unbeaten streak with a 2-0 dominating victory against Fulham. Spurs currently find themselves at the top of the table with seven wins, two draws, and zero losses. Now two-time Manager of the Month Ange Postecoglou’s brilliance is on full display, with the Aussie earning 23 points through nine contests, the most in league history.

The Lillywhites have continued to ride the incredible form of both captain Hueng-Min Son and possibly the signing of the summer newcomer James Maddison. The dynamic duo is filling the void left by Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich over the summer, with a whopping 16 combined goals and assists (Maddison: 3 G, 5 A & Son: 7 G, 1 A) that has the footy world buzzing.

Both Madders and Sonny found themselves on the scoresheet Monday afternoon, with the Captain from South Korea opening the scoring at Tottenham Hotspur stadium in a magnificent way. A curling strike from Son came in the 36th minute after plenty of missed chances from the home club, cutting inside after a ball from Richarlison (who played out wide on the left for a change), placing it beautifully over the outstretched arms of Fulham’s Bernd Leno to give Tottenham a 1-0 advantage before the break.

Fulham’s halftime adjustments were no match for Ange Ball and the new-look Tottenham as the opportunities kept coming for the home club. It only took until the 54th minute for Spurs to double their lead as Maddison slotted the pass from Son straight into the bottom right corner, erupting the home supporters. The former Leicester man’s first home goal in a Lillywhite shirt all but sealed the victory despite a few scares defensively later in the second half.

While the game ended in a comfortable 2-0 victory in the end, it was a bit of a frustrating watch for Spurs fans as the squad missed plenty of chances and opportunities to truly dominate their opponent. Despite 15 shot attempts, only five were on goal, with two finding the back of the net. Tottenham held most of the possession (56%) as well, but besides the duo of Son & Maddison, the other impressive performance came between the posts.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario had quite another incredible performance, coming up with multiple (3) key saves in both the first and second half, keeping Tottenham’s lead intact. The clean sheet was Vicario’s fourth through nine league games (Fulham, Luton Town, Bournemouth, and Man United) in what has been an incredible breakout season for the Italian net-minder.

Spurs now sit atop the Premier League table, two points above the former champions Man City. Tottenham will look to widen the gap on City on Friday with an afternoon matchup at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace. The former champions have a loaded schedule upcoming with both a midweek Champions League fixture against Young Boys on Wednesday followed by a riveting Manchester Derby on the road at Old Trafford on Saturday the 29th.
