Water main break disrupts service, floods Armdale Roundabout in Halifax – Halifax

Drivers faced a soggy commute early Monday afternoon after a water main break in the area of Chebucto Road flooded part of the Armdale Roundabout and disrupted service to surrounding areas.

Footage from Nova Scotia Webcams shortly after noon showed vehicles struggling to get through more than a foot of water. One car could be seen stalled in the middle, further impeding traffic. It was later towed away.

Traffic was once again moving through the roundabout as of 3:30 p.m.

Halifax Water said in a news release that the water main break was due to “third-party construction activity” on Roosevelt Drive near Chebucto Road.

“We are estimating that for the next 2 -3 hours, customers may have no water or very little pressure as crews shut down the broken water main for repair and the system repressurizes,” it said around 2 p.m.

Halifax Water said 20-30 customers who are close to the break may have no water until the break is repaired.

“We are asking our customers to have patience, and we apologize for any inconvenience this emergency repair work may cause,” the statement said.

Halifax Water warned that customers in the surrounding area may experience discoloured water during and after the repair. If that happens, people are asked to run cold water for about 10 minutes.

A Dalhousie University campus alert notice said due to the water outage, campus closed at 12:30 p.m., along with the University of King’s College.

A further update shortly after 3 p.m. said campus will reopen at 4:30 p.m.
