West African Basketball Classic (WABC) Unveils Groundbreaking Regional Tournament

In a momentous announcement that signals the commencement of competitive basketball in West Africa, the West African Basketball Classic (WABC) was introduced during a press conference on Thursday, February 1.

Led by an independent group from Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana, and Togo, the WABC aims to elevate club basketball in the region under the FIBA Africa Zone 3 umbrella.

The President of WABC, Olumide Oyedeji, shared exciting details about the inaugural edition, unveiling the six participating teams in this historic project.

The selected clubs include Gidi Giants and Kwara Falcons from Nigeria, ASPAC and ELAN Coton from Benin Republic, Customs from Ghana, and Swallows from Togo.

The initial phase is scheduled to take place in Togo from February 24 to March 2, followed by the second phase in Benin Republic in April.

The highly anticipated Final Four is set for June 8 to June 12 in Ghana, culminating in the grand finale in Abuja.

The competition format will include round-robin games during the group stages, enhancing the excitement and competitiveness among the participating teams.

A prestigious championship trophy and medals await the top-performing teams, with the winner earning a playing tour of China sponsored by PEAK.

This initiative marks a significant step forward for basketball in West Africa and promises a thrilling showcase of talent and competition in the region.
