Why there is no VAR in all Carabao Cup quarter-finals including Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool games

The Carabao Cup quarter-finals kicked off on Tuesday night, but there was no VAR technology on hand to review decisions.

That’s been the same throughout the competition and only gets introduced at the semi-final stage.

The VAR system is not used in earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup because not all stadiums involved have the technology at their disposal.

To make it a level playing field, it means that even if matches at Premier League stadiums it will not be used.

The technology will return for the two-legged semi-finals and the final at Wembley.

Three of the four quarter-finals are being played at Premier League stadiums, with only Port Vale’s clash with Middlesbrough the non-top flight stadium in use.

Everton faced Fulham at Goodison Park and Chelsea played Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

Those three games were taking place on Tuesday, with Liverpool vs West Ham at Anfield.

Newcastle fans would have wished VAR was in operation at Stamford Bridge following an early tackle by Moises Caicedo on Anthony Gordon.

The British transfer record signing made a nasty challenge from behind, catching Gordon on the ankle.

Fans think Caicedo could have bene sent off early on in the game

He received a yellow card, but the consensus seems to be it could have easily been a red.

If VAR was in operation who knows what the result would have been.

Chelsea and Fulham went on to win their matches through dramatic penalty shootouts, while Middlesbrough cruised through with a 3-0 win.

Liverpool or West Ham will be the final team to reach the last four.
