Matheus Cunha faces a fight to play a part in the final weeks of Wolves season after he was ruled out of Brazil’s friendly with England next month.

The forward damaged a hamstring in the home defeat by Brentford earlier this month and Wolves would not put a timeline on his recovery.

But Brazil coach Dorival Junior revealed Cunha would not be available for the games against England and Spain on March 23 or 26 respectively.

Cunha has been one of the best forwards in the Premier League this season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists to keep Wolves in the race for European football next season.

Boss Gary O’Neil would not indicate how long Cunha would be absent for but Wolves responded brilliantly by winning 2-1 at Tottenham last weekend, with struggling Sheffield United at Molineux to come on Sunday.

O’Neil has done an outstanding job in his first season at Wolves. He took charge less than a week before the start of the campaign after the club had sold £140million worth of talent, and was asked to keep the club in the top flight.

Thanks to the fine form of Cunha, Hee-chan Hwang and Pedro Neto, O’Neil has exceeded expectations and there is now little danger of Wolves being dragged into the survival battle.
