Andy Reid responds to Chris Jones’ cryptic post amid uncertainty over Super Bowl winner’s Chiefs future

Chris Jones sent Chiefs fans into a frenzy with his latest social media activity.

The Kansas City defensive tackle, a mainstay in Andy Reid’s three Super Bowl-winning teams, recently posted a photo of ‘Big Red’ on top of him as the pair celebrated their win over the 49ers in last month’s Las Vegas showpiece.

“KC……”, Jones posted with the photo as fans struggled to decipher what it all meant.

Jones is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and has made it clear he wants a new contract.

Reid was asked about the cryptic message during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show on Thursday and shared his thoughts.

“Well, that could be taken a couple of different ways,” Reid said. “But I like the dot, dots…”

“I’m hoping [there’s more to come].

“I can’t give you anything because I don’t have a whole lot. I’m doing all these media things, so maybe something is going better than I think it is.

“We’d love to have him back,” the 65-year-old added.

“Brett Veach and his gang are working through that. Chris Shea works with our cap and does the contracts.

“So, they’re all working through this thing. They’ve had great communication.

“So, we’ll just see where it goes from here.”

Reid also explained the significance of that particular photo Jones used in his post.

“The whole story behind that. Chris Jones pushed himself past the point he thought he could push himself, and I was so proud of him for that.

“When we went into overtime, he was exhausted. He had worked so hard during the game and he had a lot of snaps. He took himself to that next level. He was on the sideline at the time, and he was bent over. I told him, ‘Hey, you have a minute and 52 seconds. Let’s go! You can do it for a minute and 52 seconds.’

“He went out there and had a huge third-down play for us. So I found him bent over in the endzone in a catcher’s position when I was going to do the media part of it and so I pushed him over and I jumped on his chest. . . I was so happy for him.

“He’s a guy who has been here a long time. I’m close to the kid. I was so proud of him.”

Jones is arguably the greatest defensive tackle in the league and is rated as one of the best free agents ahead of NFL free agency.

The 29-year-old has been the linchpin of Reid’s defensive unit over the past few years and is coming off his fifth straight Pro Bowl and fourth straight All-Pro season.

Last season, he had 10.5 sacks, 30 tackles and 29 quarterback hits in 20 games including four playoff games.

Jones has been locked in contract talks with the organisation since February’s Big Game but so far there’s been no breakthrough.

Kansas City also opted against putting the franchise tag on Jones, meaning that unless a new contract is signed before 13 March, he is free to begin negotiating with other teams.

Jones would certainly have plenty of suitors but the expectation around the league is that he’ll re-sign with the Chiefs.

During the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade last month, Jones made it clear what his intentions were.

“I need three of those rings, baby, we ain’t done yet,” he said.

“Kansas City we will be back here next year. And for those who want Chris Jones gone, I ain’t going nowhere, baby!’
